If not, then you need an inciting incident. Really good writers can make the audience feel like they are just joining in without a lot of exposition. Otherwise, you wind up thinking to yourself, why is this just happening now? That's just one of the issues with "Big Stone Gap" by writer/director Adriana Trigiani.
